Chronic stress and the brain: what it changes and what reverses it

People come in convinced something is deeply wrong with them, when what I'm often seeing is a brain that has been running its alarm for two years with no recovery. That reframe alone can be a relief.
The treatment isn't just 'relax.' It's protecting recovery, treating any anxiety or depression that set in, and giving the thinking regions a chance to come back online. They usually do.
Acute stress is fine, chronic stress is the problem
The stress response isn't the enemy. A jolt of stress before a deadline or a hard conversation sharpens focus and then switches off. That's the system working as designed. The damage comes from the constant, no-recovery version, where the alarm never fully stands down.
So the question isn't whether you have stress. It's whether your system ever gets to come back to baseline, or whether it's been running hot for months.
What chronic stress does to specific regions
Under sustained stress, three regions shift in predictable ways. The amygdala, the brain's threat detector, tends to become more reactive, so smaller things set off the alarm.
