The Nebraska landscape
How psychiatric care actually works in Nebraska
Nebraska's psychiatric care sits mostly in Omaha and Lincoln, and everywhere else. Nebraska Medicine and UNMC's Department of Psychiatry anchor Omaha; CHI Health St. Elizabeth and Bryan Health anchor Lincoln; Great Plains Health in North Platte and Regional West in Scottsbluff serve the western half of the state with much thinner coverage. For adults in the Sandhills, the Panhandle, or the rural south, reaching a psychiatrist means a two- to five-hour drive each way, and many of the psychiatrists at the metro academic centers don't take new patients from those regions on any reasonable timeline. Telepsychiatry collapses that geography without changing the clinical work itself.

Nebraska + cash-pay psychiatry
Two questions to ask your insurance before deciding
Cash-pay psychiatric care in Nebraska makes sense for a specific set of situations: patients whose commercial plan has out-of-network mental-health coverage, patients with high-deductible plans early in the plan year, self-employed farmers and ranchers who buy their own coverage, and anyone whose insurance would have them wait 90 to 120 days for a psychiatrist they might rotate off of anyway. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska plans typically cover 40 to 70 percent out-of-network after deductible, which means a $395 shrinkMD evaluation often reimburses $150 to $250 back to you. HSA and FSA cards work at checkout as normal payment methods.
Before you assume cash-pay is more expensive than in-network psychiatry in Nebraska, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask two things: what percentage does your plan cover after your out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health, and what your current out-of-network deductible is and how much you've already met. The answers to those two questions determine what a shrinkMD superbill is actually worth to you in reimbursement.
For plans with any meaningful out-of-network benefit (roughly 40 to 80 percent coverage after deductible), the effective cost of a shrinkMD evaluation ends up between $60 and $220 after reimbursement, which is often comparable to an in-network specialist copay. For high-deductible plans early in the year, the full cash price applies. We built a reimbursement estimator page so you can run your own numbers before booking: shrinkmd.com/reimbursement-estimator.
Insurance picture
What insurance in Nebraska looks like for outpatient psychiatry
Nebraska Medicaid (Heritage Health) covers psychiatric care and expanded telehealth coverage during and after the pandemic. Commercial coverage in the state is dominated by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, UnitedHealthcare, and Aetna, with mental health parity required under federal MHPAEA. Out-of-network mental-health benefits vary substantially across plans; some plans have essentially no out-of-network benefit for outpatient mental health, others cover 50 to 80 percent after deductible. Calling the number on your member ID card and asking two specific questions (percentage covered out of network, and current out-of-network deductible) answers whether cash-pay plus superbill is realistic for you.
Who we serve
Where in Nebraska shrinkMD sees adults
Roughly half of Nebraska's 1.9 million residents live in the Omaha or Lincoln metros. The Tri-Cities (Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings) form a secondary population corridor along I-80. Norfolk anchors the northeast; Columbus, Fremont, and Beatrice sit within an hour of the metros. The western third of the state (Scottsbluff, Chadron, Sidney, McCook, Ogallala) has the thinnest psychiatric coverage and the longest travel distances to in-person care. shrinkMD sees adults across all of it.
Board-certified shrinkMD clinicians are licensed to see adults across all of Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk, North Platte, and every smaller city, town, and rural address in the state. Visits happen by secure video, so location within the state does not affect access.

Frequently asked questions
Good questions, clear answers
Do I have to live in Nebraska to see a shrinkMD clinician?
Yes. Our clinicians are licensed in specific states, and Nebraska is one of them. You must be physically present in Nebraska at the time of your visit, per state medical-licensure rules. That includes any Nebraska address; Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk, North Platte and any smaller community in the state all qualify.
Which insurance plans in Nebraska do you take?
None; shrinkMD is cash-pay. But we provide a superbill after every visit that you can submit to your Nebraska plan for potential out-of-network reimbursement. For most Nebraska commercial plans, that reimbursement is meaningful. Two questions to ask your insurance to find out: what percentage does your plan cover out of network for outpatient mental health, and what's your current out-of-network deductible.
What conditions do you treat?
Adult depression, anxiety, bipolar spectrum disorders, OCD, PMDD, postpartum depression, sleep problems, adjustment disorder, and related conditions. We do not treat under 18, and we do not prescribe controlled substances (stimulants for ADHD, benzodiazepines).
How soon can I be seen after joining the waitlist in Nebraska?
When shrinkMD opens in Nebraska, waitlist members get a booking window ahead of the public. From there, first available appointments depend on clinician panel size at launch. Historically in comparable practices, waitlist members book within the first two weeks of opening.
What if I need in-person care or hospitalization in Nebraska?
shrinkMD is scheduled outpatient telepsychiatry only. If you need in-person care, hospitalization, or intensive outpatient in Nebraska, we'll help you find the right resource. If it's an emergency, In Nebraska, the Nebraska Family Helpline is 1-888-866-8660 (family-focused). The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available nationally by call or text. For a medical emergency, call 911. The Nebraska Rural Response Hotline (1-800-464-0258) serves farm and rural families.
Does Nebraska state law allow psychiatric prescribing by video?
Yes. Board-certified psychiatrists and PMHNPs licensed in Nebraska may evaluate and treat Nebraska residents by video, including prescribing non-controlled psychiatric medications electronically to your local pharmacy. Federal law (Ryan Haight Act) adds requirements for controlled substances specifically, which shrinkMD does not prescribe anyway.
